“Send me the six digit code. I accidentally sent it to you.”
The message appears to come from a friend. You know the person. You may even recognise the profile picture.
Stop.
That code could be the key to taking over your WhatsApp account.
When someone tries to register your phone number on another device, WhatsApp sends a verification code to your phone. If you give that code to the scammer, you may be helping them complete the registration.
Scammers often pretend to be friends or family members. They may claim there is an emergency or say they need the code to join a group.
They do not need your password. They need you to give them the code.
Think first. Click safe.
If you receive an unexpected WhatsApp verification code:
• Do not share it with anyone.
• Do not forward or screenshot it for someone else.
• Check Settings → Account → Two step verification and enable it.
• Review Linked devices and remove anything you do not recognise.
If a friend genuinely needs help, contact them through another channel.
Remember: Your WhatsApp verification code belongs to you. Treat it like your ATM PIN.
